Traditionally Podiatrists specialised in foot structure issues and Chiropodists concentrated on improving physical issues on the surface of the feet, with some extending their expertise into foot structure re-alignment. The terms have become interchangeable since the early 1990’s and both terms are protected and can only be used by those who are fully trained. The term Foot-Care Professional can also be used by practitioners who have undergone training and are insured.
Whether a practitioner is called a chiropodist or podiatrist they should be registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This is a regulatory body that sets standards of care, hygiene and training. Medical insurance will only refund a fee charged by a chiropodist or podiatrist that is registered with the HCPC.
